Process Engineer/ PhD Candidate, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Francisca Dewan is currently pursuing her PhD part time in Metallurgical Cassandraand Materials engineering at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Her research area is Carbon Capture and Utilization, and she also has a keen interest in Hydrogen Energy. In addition, Cassandra holds a BSc. in Chemical and Process Engineering and MSc. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of the West Indies. She has over eight years of professional experience and has worked both upstream and downstream with individuals across all disciplines and departments globally.

Cassandra became an SPE member in 2013 while pursuing her masters and started volunteering for the SPETT YP committee. She then became the SPETT YP chair in 2016 and the SPETT Director of New Opportunities in 2017. She held these two positions until she moved to Brazil in 2019. Cassandra is currently the SPE LACR YP Liaison, a member of SPE YMEC and the SPE Student Paper Contest and PetroBowl 2022 Lead.

Cassandra is primarily involved in student activities regionally and internationally having volunteered year after year for the Student Paper Contest, PetroBowl Competition, Virtual Career Pathways Fair, Student Chapter Award Judge and even Section Award Judge. She played a key role in the formation of the SPE Guyana Section as well as, in the Virtual PetroBowl 2020 regional and international competitions acting as Planning Committee Lead. In 2020 she was awarded the SPE Regional Young Member Outstanding Service Award and in 2021 she was awarded the SPEI Giovanni Paccaloni Young Professional Service Award. Additionally, for the past three years, Cassandra has been a volunteer teacher at Cidadão Pró-Mundo where she teaches English to teenagers and adults from needy communities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
